Strangers Entertain Sick Child at His Window

"First, Quinn Waters' two uncles showed up at the front window. They had a water balloon fight to help cheer up the 3-year-old who lives in Weymouth, Massachusetts.

Two days later, a family friend arrived with his guitar to sing to Quinn from the front lawn. He was followed by a couple of police officers who roared up on their motorcycles and sounded their sirens and air horns.

Then things got big. Police and fire departments from Weymouth and nearby Quincy came by with lights flashing. They came to visit the child whose only contact with the outside world this summer has been through the front window of his home.

Quinn is recovering from treatment for a cancerous brain stem tumor. He has a severely compromised immune system. He has become a household name in his hometown. Hundreds of strangers have stopped by since June to turn his front lawn into a stage of sorts."

Devotions: Talking Deep

Talking Deep

"Bible Reading: Ephesians 4:25-29 Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. Ephesians 4:29

WHEN AARON’S youth pastor divided his mission team into twosomes for what he called “Care and Share,” Aaron revolted. He wanted nothing to do with anything called “Care and Share,” and he didn’t try to hide his disgust. “Girls talk,” he argued. “Guys don’t. Can I go now? When will this be over?”

If you think you can make solid friendships without ever talking about solid stuff, then you might as well try to make friends with a wall. Friendships need talktime to grow. The deeper you go into your life-feelings, joys, fears-the deeper your friendship grows. Someone has categorized communication into five levels. If you want to cultivate close friendships, here’s where you head:

Level 1: Surface topics. Conversation never gets beyond social courtesy. It sounds like, “Hi, how’s it going?” “Fine, how about you?” “Good weather, huh?” “Yeah. Better than snow.” You might touch the surface of someone’s life at this level, but you will never really get to know him or her."

Teen Discovers the FaceTime Bug that Could Land Apple in Hot Water

"A 14-year-old boy discovered Apple's shocking FaceTime bug. The error allowed just about anyone to turn an iPhone into a live microphone. When the boy reported the glitch, Apple took more than a week to respond.
"The thing that surprised me the most was that this glitch happened in the first place," said Grant Thompson, a high school freshman in Tucson, Arizona. "I'm only 14 and I found it by accident, instead of the people at Apple that get paid to find glitches."
Not only that, but Grant and his mom, Michele Thompson, said they spent a week unsuccessfully trying to get in touch with Apple. The bug allowed callers to activate another person's microphone remotely. The microphone turns on before the person has accepted or rejected the call.
"It took nine days for us to get a response," he said. "My mom contacted them almost every single day through email, calling, faxing."

Newsela: Fourth-grader's Homemade University Logo Made into a Shirt

Fourth-grader's Homemade University Logo Made into a Shirt

"It was "college colors" day at an elementary school in Altamonte Springs, Florida, on August 30. One of Laura Snyder's fourth-grade students wore an orange T-shirt representing his favorite school, the University of Tennessee.

"He was SO EXCITED to show me his shirt. I was impressed that he took it one step further to make his own label," Snyder wrote on Facebook, explaining that he drew his own UT logo with pen and paper and attached it to his shirt.

But after lunch, the student came back to her room crying.

"Some girls at the lunch table next to his (who didn't even participate in college colors day) had made fun of his sign that he had attached to his shirt. He was DEVASTATED," Snyder wrote. "I know kids can be cruel, I am aware that it's not the fanciest sign, BUT this kid used the resources he had available to him to participate in a spirit day."

In an effort to cheer him up, Snyder wrote that she planned to buy him a University of Tennessee shirt. She asked Facebook if anyone out there had any contacts at the university "to make it a little extra special for him."

What happened next completely floored her. Her post went viral on Facebook, eventually reaching University of Tennessee fans and then the university itself. The university responded by sending the student a package of UT swag for him and his classmates."

Newsela: Water Detected on Planet in the "Livable Zone" of a Distant Red Star

Water Detected on Planet in the "Livable Zone" of a Distant Red Star

"CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — Scientists have discovered water at a planet outside our solar system with temperatures that can support life. This is a first.

110 Light-Years Away
Two scientist groups found water vapor in the atmosphere of a planet 110 light-years away in the constellation Leo. Constellations are groups of stars that form patterns in the sky. A light-year is how far light travels in a year.  That is about 5.8 trillion miles. Light from our sun reaches earth in 8 minutes and 20 seconds. Stars and galaxies are so far away that their distance is measured in light-years.

This Super Earth is the right distance from its star to support life.

It is the only exoplanet we know with both water and temperatures needed for life. Exoplanets are planets outside our solar system. They orbit stars."

Up Close and Personal

"Bible Reading: James 4:7-10 Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you. James 4:8

SO HOW do you get even closer to God than you are now? Try these ideas:

Work hard and become an astronaut.
Climb Mount Everest.
Walk around on stilts.

Just kidding. Getting close to God isn’t about getting physically closer to the heavens. You want to get closer relationally. Here are a few steps you might want to consider:

First, think of God as someone who wants to be your incredibly close friend. If you ever think that God isn’t interested in you or doesn’t have time for you, whack those thoughts right out of your head. They aren’t from God. He loves you and wants to get as close to you as you let him."

DOGO News: Message In A Bottle Saves Stranded California Hikers

Message In A Bottle Saves Stranded California Hikers
"Sending a distress message in a bottle would not typically be considered a sensible strategy. However, it miraculously worked for three hikers from Morro Bay, California, who found themselves stranded atop a 40-foot waterfall at the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park on California's Central Coast.

"In June 2019, for Father's Day weekend, Curtis Whitson, his girlfriend, Krystal Ramirez, and his 13-year-old son Hunter decided to go backpacking along central California's Arroyo Seco River. Things went according to plan for the first two days, with the trio spending hours hiking through the beautiful forest and drifting down the river on inner tubes. On June 16, which happened to be Father's Day, Whitson, who was familiar with the area, led the trip to the Arroyo Seco narrows — a spot in the river surrounded by solid rock up to 40-feet-high on each side.

Whitson's planned for the group to rappel down the side of a waterfall along the river, where access is blocked by the perilous drop, and then hike the few miles back to the campgrounds where the journey had begun. However, when the hikers reached the waterfall, Whitson realized that unlike his previous trip through the area, the water currents were too strong to navigate across. To make matters worse, the rope he was expecting them to use for their descent was missing. "My heart sank when I realized the volume of water was just too dangerous to make rappelling down possible," Whitson told CNN."

DOGO News: Can A Giant Floating Pumice Rock "Raft" Help Restore Australia's Great Barrier Reef?

Can A Giant Floating Pumice Rock "Raft" Help Restore Australia's Great Barrier Reef?
"Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, home to over 1,500 fish species and countless other marine animals, is in trouble. Rising ocean temperatures, attributed to climate change, have destroyed about half of its coral since 1998. On August 30, 2019, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority downgraded the ecosystem's condition from "poor" to "very poor" and warned that the window of opportunity to save it was rapidly closing. Now, some scientists are hoping that a gigantic piece of pumice stone currently floating towards Australia will aid in the recovery of the world's largest coral reef system.

The massive sheet of stones, which stretches out 58 square miles — about the size of Washington, DC — was first spotted by Shannon Lenz on August 9, 2019. In a video posted on YouTube on August 17, 2019, (below) she wrote, "On August 9, 2019, we sailed through a pumice field for 6-8 hours, much of the time there was no visible water. It was like plowing through a field. We figured the pumice was at least 6-inches thick."

He held crying classmate's hand on first day of school; it went viral
"It was her son's first day of second grade, and April Crites worried that he would feel overwhelmed.
Conner, age 8, was waiting for the doors to open at his school in Wichita, Kansas, on August 14 when he started to cry. His autism sometimes makes him overstimulated, Crites said, and he had gotten away from his personal aide."

Jorge Soler breaks Mike Moustakas’ Royals home run record

"Royals outfielder/designated hitter Jorge Soler surpassed Mike Moustakas as the franchise’s single-season home run king on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Soler, a native of Cuba, launched his 39th home run of the year, a towering three-run blast to left-center field with two outs, off a 2-2 pitch from Detroit Tigers left-handed pitcher Daniel Norris.

The home run traveled an estimated 431 feet. Soler, 27, surpassed his former teammate Moustakas’ mark of 38 home runs set in 2017. The Royals still have 23 games remaining this season after Tuesday night."
