Adorable Baby Koala Mistakes Pet Dog For Its Mother
"An Australian dog is still recovering from a hilarious case of mistaken identity. On October 6, 2019, Tony was out in his yard in Adelaide, South Australia, with his owner Henry when a baby koala leaped onto his back. The bewildered pooch squirmed around to nudge the adorable joey, which was clinging to its fur, off his body. Every time he thought he had succeeded, the smart koala found a way to clamber back on.

The gentle pooch eventually managed to get rid of the koala by rolling on his back, at which point the marsupial scurried back into the trees in search of its real mom. Henry, who caught the entire scene on camera, says the koala, who lives in his backyard, is newly independent of its mother. He speculates it may have mistaken his friendly and tolerant dog for its parent."

St. Louis Blues Superfan Laila Anderson is Surprised as Team Gives her Championship Ring

"The St. Louis Blues (https://www.usatoday.com/sports/nhl/blues/) made sure to honor young superfan Laila Anderson for her role in the franchise's first Stanley Cup victory (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/columnist/kevinallen/2019/06/12/stanley-cup-finals-blues-beat-bruins-game-7-firsttitle/1439611001/) by inscribing her name on their championship rings (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/2019/09/30/st-louis-blueschampionship-rings-stanley-cup-gloria-laila/3826981002/).

Then they went one step further by going to her house and presenting her with her own copy. "You know how much you mean to us, right, and what an inspiration you've been to so many people," said forward Alexander Steen, who showed up with defenseman Colton Parayko. "So me and Colton are here and representing our organization and everybody there, and we have something that we would like you to open right now."

Newsela: Earth's Oldest Rock May Have Been Discovered (On The Moon!)

Earth's Oldest Rock May Have Been Discovered (On The Moon!)

"On February 6, 1971, the late astronaut Alan Shepard, the commander of NASA's Apollo 14 mission, was taking a walk on the moon. He and fellow space traveler Edgar Mitchell were out busily gathering rocks around an area called Cone Crater. To quote Shepard himself, many of these were "hand-sized grab samples." The pair took home some larger mementos, too.

One basketball-sized rock — collected by Shepard — earned itself a nickname: "Big Bertha." It was officially known as "Lunar Sample 14321." Big Bertha weighs about 19 pounds. That makes it the largest rock that Apollo 14 brought back to Earth. It is the third-largest recovered by any of the Apollo missions.

Although Shepard found Big Bertha on the moon, that may not be where its story began. The rock is a breccia, a hodgepodge of geologic fragments called "clasts." They are held together by a cement-like mix. A newly published hypothesis says part of Big Bertha formed billions of years ago — right here on planet Earth. In fact, despite the lunar connection, this could represent the oldest "Earth rock" ever discovered."

Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve Is Home To An Adorable Polka-Dotted Zebra Foal

"The Masai Mara Reserve is one of Kenya's most popular tourist attractions. Every year, thousands of people flock to the national park to glimpse of a variety of wild animals, such as lions and cheetahs, or to witness the majestic annual migration of over 1.5 million wildebeests to and from neighboring Tanzania. However, this September's human "stampede" is due to an unexpected animal — a zebra foal with polka dots!

Anthony Tira, a local tour guide and photographer, was the first to notice the zebra's unusual pattern in mid-September. “At first I thought it was a zebra that had been captured and painted or marked for purposes of migration,” he told George Sayagie of the Daily Nation, a Kenyan newspaper. “I was confused when I first saw it.”

Protective Walrus Mom Sinks Russian Research Boat In The Arctic Ocean

"A female walrus demonstrated the lengths moms — animal and human alike — will go in order to protect their offspring when she sank a Russian research boat that came close to her calves. The incident occurred on September 18, 2019, when a team of sailors and scientists from Russia's Northern Fleet and Geographical Society were sailing to Wilczek Island in the Arctic Ocean.

To reach the island, the team transferred from their expedition vessel, Altai, to an inflatable landing boat. However, as they were sailing to shore, a female walrus suddenly emerged from the ocean and lunged at their rubber dinghy. Her sharp, large teeth cut through the plastic, causing the boat to fill up with water and sink. Fortunately, the researchers were close to Wilczek Island's Cape Geller and managed to jump out and swim to land. Experts from the Russian Geographical Society later said the marine mammal's aggressive behavior was a defensive mechanism to protect her young.

Though unsettling, the incident was not enough to derail the scientists from continuing their mission of surveying Arctic glaciers and wildlife in Franz Josef Land. The archipelago, which includes Wilczek Island, comprises 192 islands formed from marine deposits of the Early and Middle Jurassic age. The mostly uninhabited ice-covered landmasses, with a total area of 16,134 km2, are home to hundreds of wildlife species."

This 9-year-old Learned the Heimlich Maneuver. The Next Day, She Saw Her Friend Choking.

"Shailyn Ryan is a 9-year-old from Massachusetts. She learned how to do the Heimlich maneuver at a "Home Alone" kids safety class. One day after her class she looked up and saw her friend turning blue.

It happened during lunch in the cafeteria on May 1 at Marguerite Peaslee Elementary School in Northborough. Shailyn suddenly felt a hand grip her left shoulder.

Her good friend and soccer teammate, Keira Silvia, age 8, held a hand to her own throat. Her face rapidly turned red, then blue. Keira was unable to speak, but Shailyn knew she was choking.

Shailyn leaped from her seat, stood behind Keira, tipped her friend slightly forward, then wrapped her arms around her waist. Making a fist with one hand and grasping it with her other hand above Keira's navel, she then pressed as hard as she could into her abdomen. She pushed upward as though she was trying to lift her up.

Just as she had learned to do 16 hours earlier."

Newsela: Online Bullying is a Problem That's Only Getting Worse in the U.S.

Online Bullying is a Problem That's Only Getting Worse in the U.S.

"SEATTLE, Washington — Rachel Whalen remembers feeling gutted in high school when a former friend would cyberbully her. The friend would mock her online postings and threaten to unfollow or unfriend her on social media. She would also post inside jokes about her to others online.

The cyberbullying was so distressing that Whalen said she considered suicide.
Suicide is when a person ends his or her own life. Experts say that often mental illness is what leads to suicide.

Mental illnesses are serious conditions that are different than feeling sad. Feeling sad, lonely or unhappy sometimes is normal and is usually related to what is happening in your life. Mental illness, on the other hand, refers to disorders that affect someone's mood, thoughts and behavior. Anxiety and depression are examples of mental illnesses. Most mental illnesses can be treated by doctors. They can also be treated with medication.

Once Whalen got help, she decided to limit her time on social media. It helps to take a break from it for perspective, said Whalen, now a 19-year-old college student in Utah.

There's a rise in cyberbullying nationwide. Three times as many girls report being harassed online or by text message than boys. That's according to the National Center for Education Statistics, which is part of the U.S. Department of Education."

Newsela: Food is Wasted and Kids Don't Eat Because Lunchtimes are Too Short

Food is Wasted and Kids Don't Eat Because Lunchtimes are Too Short

"Deb Shell sent her three children to school every day in Berkeley, California, with packed lunches. Every day, they came home with their lunch bags almost full.

Shell learned that the school district had cut lunchtime at some schools to add time in classes. Many kids were going hungry.

Parents including Shell went to observe lunch. They saw that the problem was worse for students who had to stand in line for their meals.

The students are supposed to have 20 minutes to eat, but they often have only 15, Shell said. The ending bell rang, and there were still 18 kids who hadn't been served, she said. "They got their food and dumped it right in the trash and were dismissed for recess." She was sad to watch young kids not eat and angry to see food wasted, she said.

Shell has started pushing for a longer lunchtime at her kids' school."

Devotions: It’s What’s Inside That Counts

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

"Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 16:7 People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at a person’s thoughts and intentions. 1 Samuel 16:7

CATHERINE’S cover-girl beauty qualies her for the pages of Vogue or Mademoiselle. Her slim figure slides perfectly into a black evening gown. Her elegance and charm would grace the elite parties of the super-rich. So what is she doing in a sewer?

In the old hit television series Beauty and the Beast, Catherine hangs around Vincent the manbeast. The whole plot of the series revolves around one gigantic question: What does she see in him? A gorgeous woman in love with a half-man, half-lion who lives in abandoned subway tunnels-what’s up with that?

That puzzle, of course, is part of why the show works. Catherine is attracted to Vincent not because of his appearance, but in spite of it. She is in love with the guy under the lion’s mane. She loves him for his sensitivity and compassion. And part of the show’s appeal is that love like that is rare.

Lots of people buy into the idea that looks are everything. Our culture tells you that girls or guys who lack the looks of supermodels are, well, unattractive. That’s ridiculous. Television, magazines, movies, and videos constantly drum into us a pre packaged image of what is beautiful and what is not. The media machine also pushes the idea that being beautiful means instant, unending happiness."

Devotions: Loving the Person in the Mirror

Loving the Person in the Mirror

"Bible Reading: Ephesians 5:25-30 No one hates his own body but lovingly cares for it, just as Christ cares for his body, which is the church. Ephesians 5:29

TODAY’S VOCABULARY word: Narcissism.

Can you pick the correct definition from the three choices below?

a. a plant with smooth leaves and white, yellow, or orange flowers

b. a new religion practiced by devoted narks

c. excessive interest in one’s own appearance, importance, abilities, etc.

If you picked c, you either know your Greek mythology or you’re a good guesser. Narcissism describes someone in love with himself. A lot of people think that’s what Jesus’ words in Matthew 22:39 are all about: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

“Wait a minute!” some people always say. “That’s not right. We’re not supposed to love ourselves. The Bible commands us to deny self and take up our cross. Jesus said if I love my life, I will lose it. It’s like that acrostic J-O-Y: Jesus first, Others second, Yourself last. Self-love is narcissism-right up there with pride and conceit, things we are to avoid.”
Wrong. Proper self-love is right for at least three big biblical reasons."
