How are rangoli designs created? These videos are titled with the word “easy,” but this traditional art takes practice. The compilation video above, shared by the India-based PakkaLocal YouTube channel, captures how Menaka’s Rangoli creates four celebratory rangoli designs, including a rainbow peacock kolam and single color dots rangoli.

In a closing ceremony handoff between the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games (held in 2021) and those to be held in Paris in 2024, 128 professional and amateur performers work as one in an original routine created by choreographer Sadeck Waff.
The arm gesture dance moves are set to a piece titled Prologue by music video director and songwriter Woodkid, performed by the Orchestre National de France. The short was directed by Thibaut Charlut.

When it’s hard to pour a bag of large marbles into a box, build a giant cardboard marble run that can do it.
In the Rube Goldberg tradition of creating a complex machine for a simple task, Japan-based cardboard crafter DanCreator designed, cut, glued, and assembled a huge multi-level series of tracks over the course of a two-month build.

Rest in His Peace

I am leaving you with a gift-peace of mind and heart. John 14:27

IT’S NIGHTTIME, only a few hours after Jesus was crucified and buried. The disciples are sitting around together, still in shock from the brutal execution of their beloved Master. The following conversation isn’t in the Bible, but something like it might have happened.
“I can’t believe we were just eating dinner with the Master,” Bartholomew says, shaking his head. “It seems like only yesterday.”
“That’s because it was yesterday, Bart,” Peter snorts impatiently.
“Oh yeah, I knew that,” Bartholomew snaps.
Thaddaeus scratches his head. “The Master told us so many things last night during dinner. I wish I had listened better.”...

The pandemic-delayed Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, which took place from Aug. 24 to Sept. 5, 2021, attracted a record number of competitors. A total of 4,403 athletes — 2,550 male and 1,853 female — competed across 22 sports and 23 disciplines. Here are a handful of the incredible men and women whose determination and grit shattered all stereotypes and exhibited the best of humanity.

Asiya Mohammad
Kenyan-born Asiya Mohammad had a rough start in life. She was just two years old when she lost her legs and a few fingers in a train accident. Her father died of a stroke shortly after, and her mother passed away when she was just nine. Raised by a cousin, Mohammad first turned to sports as a teenager looking to lose weight.

The double-amputee initially pursued, and even competed in, wheelchair marathons. She then switched to wheelchair tennis, before taking up rowing in 2018...

Ibrahim Hamadtou Tokyo 2021
Table tennis may not seem a plausible option for someone with no arms — until you see Ibrahim Hamadtou. The 48-year-old Egyptian Paralympian plays the sport by holding the paddle in his mouth and using his right foot to serve the ball.
Hamadtou, who lost his arms in a train accident at the age of ten, was drawn to table tennis after being challenged by a friend. "I was in the club...

Daniel Dias: The Greatest Paralympic Swimmer of All Time

Brazilian swimmer Daniel Dias was a late bloomer. He took up swimming at 16 after watching fellow Brazilian swimmer Clodoaldo Silva win seven medals at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games. As it turns out, Dias — who was born with a partially formed left hand, a right arm that ends at the elbow, and a right leg that stops at the knee — was a natural at the sport....

TKSST:  Why Are Scorpions Fluorescent?

9/8/2021

Picture
Scorpions fluoresce—they glow a bright green color—in ultraviolet light, “such as an electric black light or natural moonlight.” Professor Carl Kloock of Cal State Bakersfield has around six ideas as to why.

In this sponsored Veritasium video, Derek Muller heads into the desert at night to talk about some of Kloock’s hypotheses—proposed explanations “made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation”—and learns about the experiments Kloock created to test them. Along the way, they catch a few of these glowing arachnids for a closer look....
