DOGO News:  Japanese Robot-Staffed Hotel Chain "Fires" Employees For Incompetence

Those concerned that robots are taking over the world can rest easy – for now. Though the androids have proved useful at performing mundane tasks, they are not ready for prime time. At least that appears to be the case at Japan’s cutting-edge Henn-na Hotel chain where over half of the robot staff is being replaced by humans.

TT:  Wave of Butterflies Lights Up Weather Radar

A lacy, cloud-like pattern drifted across a Denver-area radar screen. It turned out to be a wave of butterflies. It was 70 miles wide. That's according to forecasters.
Paul Schlatter works for the National Weather Service. He said he first thought flocks of birds were making the pattern he saw on the radar Tuesday. But the cloud was headed northwest with the wind. Migrating birds would be southbound in October.

DOGO News:  Newsflash: The Mona Lisa Is Not Looking At You

The eyes of Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic Mona Lisa have long been thought to follow viewers around the gallery of the Louvre Museum in Paris where it is exhibited, as well as those looking at photographs and reproductions of the famous painting. Now, researchers from Germany's Bielefeld University assert that while “The Mona Lisa Effect” – the impression that the eyes of the subject in a portrait are following the viewer – is real, it is not true for its namesake painting.

DOGO News:  NASA's NeMO-Net Will Give Scientists A Valid Excuse To Play Video Games

Coral reefs are some of the most diverse and vital ecosystems on Earth. The colorful underwater colonies of coral polyps, held together by calcium carbonate, provide homes for many marine plants and animals and help keep the ocean's nitrogen levels balanced. But while scientists are aware of where the world’s reef systems are located, there is no complete record of all the different types of coral that live there. Now, NASA researchers are hoping to entice nature lovers, both experts and amateurs, to help them create a comprehensive database of these all-important ecosystems by playing a fun, interactive video game!

TT:  Astronauts teach "lost lessons" to honor Challenger Shuttle astronaut, Christa McAuliffe

Christa McAuliffe was NASA’s first designated teacher in space. She had prepared lessons to record during her time aboard the space shuttle Challenger. But she never had the chance to carry out her plan. On January 28, 1986, just 73 seconds into its flight, the ship exploded. It killed McAuliffe and six other crew members on board.
Joe Acaba and Ricky Arnold are two teachers-turned-astronauts. They will pay tribute to McAuliffe and her work. They plan to record these “lost lessons” while on the International Space Station. They plan to do this over the next several months. That's according to Marcia Dunn reporting for Associated Press.

DOGO News:  Geminid Showers Promise A Stellar Show This Week

Though we are treated to several meteor showers throughout the year, most pale in comparison to the grand finale – the Geminids. Expected to be at their peak on Thursday and Friday night (Dec. 13-14, 2018), the dependable meteors rank high in both quantity and quality. Nicknamed the “900-pound gorilla of meteor showers” by NASA, they outweigh other dust streams by factors of between 5 to 500! The shooting stars are also easier to spot because they streak through the skies at a noticeably slower pace, encountering Earth at about 22 miles (35 kilometers) per second, or about half the speed of the Perseids meteors’ 37 miles (60 kilometers) per second.

TT:  Martin Luther King’s 1st “I Have a Dream” Speech

Before the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech to hundreds of thousands gathered in Washington in 1963, he perfected his civil rights message. That was before a much smaller audience in North Carolina.

Reporters had covered King's 55-minute speech at a high school gymnasium in Rocky Mount. It was on Nov. 27, 1962. But a recording was not known to exist until English professor Jason Miller found a reel-to-reel tape It was in a town library. Miller played it in public for the first time Aug. 11 at North Carolina State University.

Churchill, Manitoba is a sparsely populated town. It is at the mercy of the Northern winds off Canada’s Hudson Bay. It might be just another dot on the map if not for its seasonal residents of the four-legged variety.

TT:  Step Inside Spain's Glittering Mountain of Salt

From a distance, Muntanya de Sal looks like any other mountain. But then you head to its base and it’s clear that it’s completely different from any other peak in Europe. Muntanya de Sal is made of salt. It is unlike other outcroppings piercing through the rolling landscape.
It is in the village of Cardona, Spain. That is about 60 miles northwest of Barcelona. Muntanya de Sal is also called Salt Mountain. It has been an important resource for the people residing in the area over the centuries. Locals removed salt from the surface. They used it as a commodity. The earliest evidence occurred sometime during the Neolithic period (approximately 10,000 BCE). That is according to historians.

TT:  Experience the Glory of GingerBread Lane

The day after Christmas is typically a time for relaxation and reflection. This comes after a busy holiday season. But that is not true for Jon Lovitch. December 26 is the day he gets started on next year’s Christmas miracle. He hits up stores’ post-holiday sales. He stocks up on sugar. He stocks up on candy and other sweets. He will  use them to build his next GingerBread Lane. He is driven by visions of Yuletide glory.
