"Deb Shell sent her three children to school every day in Berkeley, California, with packed lunches. Every day, they came home with their lunch bags almost full.
Shell learned that the school district had cut lunchtime at some schools to add time in classes. Many kids were going hungry.
Parents including Shell went to observe lunch. They saw that the problem was worse for students who had to stand in line for their meals.
The students are supposed to have 20 minutes to eat, but they often have only 15, Shell said. The ending bell rang, and there were still 18 kids who hadn't been served, she said. "They got their food and dumped it right in the trash and were dismissed for recess." She was sad to watch young kids not eat and angry to see food wasted, she said.
Shell has started pushing for a longer lunchtime at her kids' school."
