Tim Elmore:  How Involved Should Parents Be in Their Child's Education?

During the past month, I found myself speaking to more than 6,500 parents in various locations across the U.S. I never have a more engaged audience than when I’m interacting with moms and dads.
That month, I found the most popular question was--how do I support my child in school?
Behind that question are looming thoughts like:
  • My daughter is so stressed out—should I just do her homework for her?
  • My son is so busy with sports and lessons—should I excuse him from doing his chores?
  • My kids are both falling behind—should I talk to their teacher about easing up a bit?
Today’s parental expectations are different than they were in the past. All generations of parents care about their kids’ future, but today, we feel we need to ensure they reach their goals, even if it means: ......

The Simple Dollar, Trent Hamm:  Big Changes, Small Changes, and Disruption

The Simple Dollar, Trent Hamm:  Big Changes, Small Changes, and Disruption

One of the more interesting differences of opinion amongst personal finance books and websites is whether or not it makes sense to focus on making a few big changes or a lot of small changes.
Let’s say you make 10 small changes to your life that each save you $1 a day. Over the course of a month, that’s $300 — $1 times 10 things times 30 days in a month.
On the other hand, let’s say you make 3 big changes to your life that each save you $100 a month. Over the course of a month, that’s also $300 — $100 times 3.
Obviously, both approaches are going to save money, but which one is the better approach?
Some will argue for the smaller number of big changes. You’re far better off making a few really high impact changes, goes that argument and this enables you to live your day to day life. The argument here is that it’s not the $5 coffee that’s damaging you, but the $100 cable bill.

Jeff Reagan Sunday Thoughts:  Failure

Guess what?
I’m a failure. And so are you.
How did that make you feel? I’m guessing, not very good. But stick with me for a minute here this Sunday…
It’s impossible to live in this world without failing at something.
Though I guess you could live your life so cautiously, with no risk and never stretching and never reaching for change, that you can’t help but succeed at things.
But then, that’s not really living, is it? Which is… failure by default.

Connect Safely:  Research Finds Teens May NOT be Suffering from Too Much Tech Use

Numerous articles have been published linking tech use among adolescents with increase rates of depression, suicide and other harms. Back in 2011, an article in the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics coined the term Facebook Depression, designating “when preteens and teens spend a great deal of time on social media sites, such as Facebook and then begin to exhibit classic symptoms of depression.” but a number of experts refuted that claim. At the time, I wrote “After examining the report’s related references, speaking with the report’s lead author and talking to the lead author of one of the research studies that the claim is based on, I’ve concluded that the diagnosis of Facebook depression is a nonexistent condition.”  Of course, people can become depressed when they encounter depressing content on Facebook, but that would be true in any venue.

Bankrate:  How to Thaw a Credit Freeze

Freezing your credit is an excellent way to protect yourself against identity theft in a world where data breaches and hacks are becoming more and more common. During the 2017 Equifax data breach, for example, over 140 million Americans had their personal information exposed.

Freezing your credit reports can help prevent identity thieves from using leaked personal information to apply for credit in your name; if a thief did use your information to request credit, the lender would attempt a credit inquiry, learn that the credit reports were frozen, and deny the request.

Make Use Of:  Chromebook vs. Tablet: Which Is Right For You?

You need a new device to browse the internet, but you don’t want to spend the money on a clunky new laptop. That leaves you with two different, but viable options: a Chromebook or a tablet. Both of these devices allow you to easily stream videos, surf the web, and download apps.

So, what exactly makes these devices stand out from each other? This handy comparison can help you determine whether a Chromebook or tablet is right for you.

Tim Elmore:  Parents: Why You Need to Stop Doing Your Kid’s Work

The latest example of the new way parents view their children just occurred. It illustrates our shift from equipping our youth to cope with adversity, to seeking ways to reduce the adversity. Instead of believing they’re strong enough to face tough times, we look outward for an answer.

It happened the week following Kobe Bryant’s tragic helicopter crash, killing all nine people on board. I was in disbelief over this horrible accident but had no idea how parents would react. One high school principal told me he received several phone calls the next day asking if he would have extra counselors on campus to manage the kids’ grief. Another parent assumed the students should get some time off.
Wow. I think that may just be a bit melodramatic.

Today's Parent:  18 Crazy YouTube Challenges Kids are Doing

The risk of your kid doing a stupid dare is no longer limited to peer pressure at school. Any child with access to social media can be exposed to these sometimes gross, sometimes dangerous challenges that are trending online on platforms like YouTube and TikTok.
Childish (and sometimes harmful) dares are nothing new. For instance, “bloody knuckles” and “hand slaps” are pain-inducing games that kids and teenagers have been playing for years. But today, kids are performing increasingly dangerous and potentially deadly challenges, then posting videos of the acts online in order to gain likes and views.
Here are some of the popular challenges kids are trying.

Jeff Reagan Sunday Thought:  "Did You Know this about Crosswalks?"

I read an interesting article recently, and at first it made me a little mad.
But once I thought about it for a bit, there’s something going on here that we can really harness in our lives, for the better.

Get this: Did you know that when you approach a crosswalk at an intersection, and you push the button to prompt a “Walk” signal, most of the time, pushing the button does absolutely nothing?
