Common Sense Media:  How to Raise a Reader
by Regan Mcmahon

"Kids become lifelong readers for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes there's one key book that captures a kid's imagination and opens him or her up to the exciting world of fiction. Other times, a teacher who assigns great books in class sparks a hunger for more big ideas and fine writing. In some cases, parents influence kids' appreciation of books by sharing their own love of literature and modeling reader behavior -- always having a book to read, taking books on vacation, reading before bedtime, making regular trips to the library and bookstore, etc."

Common Sense Media:  Essential Books Guide
"Parents often ask us to suggest good books for their kids -- ones that will engage, entertain, and maybe even enlighten them. So we've scoured our recommendation lists and consulted with teachers, librarians, and book critics to assemble what we consider essential titles for your home bookshelves or to download to your e-reader, smartphone, or tablet. From the classics to more recent must-reads, from fantasy to funny, from bedtime stories to chapter books to true literature and more, we have more than 150 great book suggestions for your kids and teens. Just search our themed categories, and you'll find all our picks arranged by age groups."

Common Sense Media:  Best Books for Families
"Sure, your kids love Harry Potter and Twilight
-- but what else will keep young bookworms reading? Whether you're on the hunt for classic kids' books or best sellers, our "best books" lists are full of stories that are bound to spark kids' imagination and keep the pages turning."

Note:  I am a big fan of Common Sense Media!  However, make sure to know what is in every book you put into the hands of your children.  Even if it is on a list from a source you trust.

Story Time from Space
"Story Time From Space combines science literacy outreach with simple demonstrations recorded aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Crew members read five science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related children's books in orbit, and complete simple science concept experiments. Crew members videotape themselves reading the books and completing demonstrations. Video and data collected during the demonstrations are downlinked to the ground and posted in a video library with accompanying educational materials."

10 Things that Make Kids Less Anxious
Power of Positivity Article

“Anxiety is a normal part of childhood, and every child goes through phases. A phase is temporary and usually harmless. But children who suffer from an anxiety disorder experience fear, nervousness, and shyness, and they start to avoid places and activities.” ~ Anxiety and Depression Association of America

It is estimated that anxiety disorders affect one in eight children. Studies show that children with untreated anxiety are more likely to engage in substance abuse, under-perform academically, and remove themselves from important social development experiences..."
