How to Geek:
What Are Hardware Drivers, and Why Do They Cause So Many Problems?

by Josh Hendrickson
If you’ve experienced a computer crash, a hardware driver may have been the cause. These are pieces of software that your computer’s operating system uses to talk to its hardware. Every operating system—from Windows to Android—uses hardware drivers.
Drivers Are Like Translators For Your ComputerAt a fundamental level, two main components comprise a computer—software and hardware. The software is your operating system (OS) and any programs and apps you have installed on it. Your motherboard, RAM, mouse, keyboard, printer, and anything else physical connected to your computer make up the hardware.

How to Geek:  Do Video Sharing Services Care if You Share Your Account?

Do you feel like a rogue bandit every time you log in to a friend’s streaming account? If you do, you probably shouldn’t feel that way. Streaming services don’t care about account sharing.
Streaming websites don’t want to give their service away for free. They just don’t punish users for account sharing, and they usually enable the practice by allowing multi-device simultaneous streaming. In fact, some streaming services have figured out how to capitalize off of account sharing and quietly encourage it.

Power of Positivity:  Tired of Robocalls? Stop Answering Your Phone

If the idea of ignoring your phone sends you into a fit of cognitive dissonance, then congratulations, you’re a well-adjusted human being and a perfect target for robocallers.
Phones have been around for well over 100 years, and we’ve spent that time developing a complex and universal system of phone etiquette. You answer a call with “hello,” you end a call with “goodbye,” and you politely spend the last three or four minutes of a call repeating “okay, yeah, right, uh-huh.”
But it’s the very first step of phone etiquette that robocallers use to take advantage of us. When you get a call, you answer it. Why? Well, according to Volume 5 of the American Telephone Journal—published in 1902—ignoring a phone call is rude and wastes “some seconds or minutes” of the caller’s “valuable time.”

Power of Positivity: Scientists Explain 5 Hobbies That Make You Smarter

Any activity that stimulates your brain may improve your intelligence. Yes, you read that right. Even some television shows (think The History Channel or National Geographic) can make you a smarter egg. Of course, you want to find the right hobbies that can make you smarter.
Not all hobbies are created equally, however. Lounging about glued to the tube will do next-to-nothing for your smarts. The same goes for “hobbies” like social media (blah!) or reading up on celebrity gossip in the latest issue of “Trash Magazine.”

Power of Positivity -
San Francisco Man Repopulates a Rare Butterfly At Home

The more humans encroach on wildlife and the natural environment, the more species will be driven to extinction. The California pipevine swallowtail is a gorgeous blue butterfly that has called San Francisco home for hundreds of years. However, since urban expansion has been increasing since the 20th century, sightings of this butterfly have steadily declined.

To give you some background on the pipevine swallowtail, the butterfly’s life begins inside little red eggs that lie on top of leaves and tree branches. Then, the eggs crack and black caterpillars with orange spots emerge, eventually transforming into the breathtaking blue butterflies.

How to Geek - The Worst Things About Owning a Smarthome

How to Geek - The Worst Things About Owning a Smarthome
Written by Josh Hendrickson

Sometimes owning a smarthome feels like becoming a part-time electrician, only without proper training. Old houses have all sorts of “gotchas,” and some issues you may encounter are out of date wiring, non-functioning doorbells, and thick signal-killing walls. You might even discover you can’t use a wired video doorbell at all—and it may be prohibitively expensive to fix it.

Take it from me. My house was built in 1956, and I can’t use smart light switches because it doesn’t have neutral wires in half the rooms in the house! Most smart switches need a neutral wire, but in the 1950s neutral wires weren’t called for in the electrical code. Work done on the house brought a few rooms up to code, but it’s inconsistent at best.  If your house isn’t up to code, getting it there means calling an electrician. They’ll have to run wires through your home, which may be difficult or impossible, and you’ll spend quite a bit in labor alone.

Building Your Discipline Toolkit From a Biblical Perspective
By Danny Huerta, MSW, LCSW, LSSW

What do you think of when you hear the word discipline? Many people immediately make the association with "punishment." And, according to the Focus on the Family website statistics, a lot of people are asking whether spanking is biblical or not.
The truth is, the Bible – and the dictionary, for that matter – take a much broader view of discipline.

FOTF:  Is Spanking Biblical?

Is Spanking Biblical?

By Danny Huerta, MSW, LCSW, LSSW

How often have you heard the adage, “Spare the rod; spoil the child?” What verse is that anyway?
The truth is, that’s not in the Bible anywhere. It’s a misquote of Proverbs 13:24 which states “whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.”
Notice the emphasis on “diligent to discipline.” Discipline is not a synonym for spanking, but rather a reference to the parents’ role to teach, guide, correct and love their children. And that is accomplished through a comprehensive set of discipline tools.
