Parent Toolkit:  Risk-taking and the Teen Brain

During adolescence, your child’s body matures and she becomes more self-sufficient and independent. These years also bring dramatic hormonal fluctuations, greater peer pressure, increased access to drugs, alcohol, sex, and the risk of unsafe driving practices. The problem is that the part of the brain that will in later years guide her logical thinking, judgment, prioritizing, and risk-assessment has yet to literally “get it together.” This can be a setup for disaster.

The neural networks in the brain that will ultimately guide your child’s self-control and goal-directed behavior are called executive functions. These circuits are located in the prefrontal cortex, which is the last part of the brain to mature.

Parent Toolkit:  How to Tap into Your Middle Schooler's Brain - Video Series

Let’s be honest – middle schoolers get a bad rap. But why? It turns out, their brains are actually growing faster than any other time in their lives, other than infancy, leading to a lot questionable decisions—but also a lot of potential. Experts Michelle Icard, Judy Willis, Laura Tierney, Natasha Burgert, Tim Coleman and Ahna Suleiman weighed in to give us an inside look at just what goes on in the brain during this time – and how we, as parents, can help navigate all of the changes and developments. Special thanks to NBC News education correspondent Rehema Ellis for voicing this series.

Parent ToolKit:  8th Grade Nutrition Guide

During the teenage years, your child is making the transition to adulthood. In terms of their nutrition and diet, it is likely they have more autonomy over their food choices and many of their tastes have been developed. they're also more independent –eating at restaurants with friends, stopping at convenience stores or vending machines on their way to and from school. You're less likely to be able to monitor everything they're eating, but proper nutrition is important, especially as your child is going through puberty and growing quickly. According to the Academy of Pediatrics, most adolescents fall short of their daily quotas of calcium, iron, and zinc - all of which are important minerals for a healthy growing body. If your child's diet is full of a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low-fat dairy, your child should be consuming all the nutrients and calories your child needs to fully support their body's growth.

Parent ToolKit:  Have a Resolution to Lose Weight?  How Your Actions Affect Your Child's Body Image

"As a practicing pediatrician, part of my job is to have honest discussions about the physical measures of weight. Building the life-skill of body confidence in a young child, however, is beyond any singular statement I could say at a checkup. Developing a positive body image is a dynamic journey that changes in intensity as children grow, and an important responsibility of every parent to appropriately guide."

Why Parents Should Prioritize Mental Health This School Year

"How is summer already over? It seems that it’s only just begun. The reality is the kids will be back to middle and high school before the last sip of summer is had. And with the new year, there are often new challenges. As many say, “Little kids, little problems. Big kids, big problems.” But mental health issues that are diagnosed and treated early have the best prognosis and do not have to become “big problems.” As our children grow into tweens and teens, there is a new landscape to understand. As parents, it is crucial to tend to your child’s mental health just as you do their physical health..."
