TKSST:  The Art of Georgia O’Keeffe (and how to see more and care less)

7/1/2020

Picture
Feeling disconnected from creating art within classical conventions, artist Georgia O’Keeffe began experimenting with abstract drawings that defied easy classification. Using the shapes and rhythms of nature to capture her internal world, these experiments became the cornerstone of the movement known as American Modernism.

…and O’Keeffe has since become known as the mother of American Modernism, an artistic movement that “shared a desire to challenge the realist traditions that dominated art education.” The art of Georgia O’Keeffe and how to see more and care less is a TED-Ed lesson by Iseult Gillespie. The animation was directed by Lisa LaBracio....

TKSST:  Why are Glasswing Butterfly Wings Clear?

Glasswing butterflies aren’t made of glass, but their transparent wings help them blend with their surroundings, protecting them from predators. This Deep Look episode from KQED takes the time to observe the life cycle of glasswing butterflies (Greta oto), as well as the special nanopillars responsible for their non-reflecting wings.
While camouflage is common in nature, actual attempts at invisibility are rare. “Glasswings excel at being dull, and that helps them hide in plain sight.”

Three hundred and seventy-four flips per second or 22,440 rpm: That’s how quickly globular springtails spin when they jump from standing position. How does that compare with a helicopter rotor or racecar engines? Globular springtails are spinning faster. See them in their slow-mo glory and learn more about this small omnivorous hexapod in this video by AntLab‘s Dr. Adrian Smith.

This video is 15 full minutes of amazing. And the best part of watching is that these puppet activities will no doubt inspire kids of all ages to create their own muppet-like characters. Watch Jim Henson and muppet designer and builder Don Sahlin demonstrate how to make puppets from socks, tennis balls, cloth, wooden spoons, potatoes, and other things you can find around the house.
This pre-Sesame Street video aired on Public Television on Iowa Public Television’s Volume See kids’ show in 1969.

Picture
Pass The Pepper is an astonishing, social distancing-themed, Rube Goldberg machine that promises a “fool-proof method for completely safe, germ-free passing of condiments across the table.” A two-month collaboration between Joseph Herscher of Joseph’s Machines and Lyle Broughton of JackofAllSpades98, this screen-linked video is chock-full of intricate chain reactions. Many of them look like catastrophic mistakes, only to reveal that they were in the plan all along.

Assembling Jeff Koons’ Massive Play-Doh Sculpture, a Time-lapse

A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the intricate construction of Jeff Koons’ monumental masterpiece. In 2014 Jeff Koons debuted his massive sculpture, Play-Doh, one of the largest and most complex works from the Celebration series he had begun in the mid-1990s. The piece, which took two decades to complete, instantly became an icon of contemporary art. Play-Doh’s execution was the result of decades of research and craftsmanship, and the contributions of scientists, metallurgists and modellers. Painstakingly constructed out of 27 interlocking sections of aluminium, each fitted on top of the other, Play-Doh is held together by gravity alone. Although viewers will never see it — except when the work is taken apart, as shown in this video — Koons painted each of these sections in their entirety. In addition to creating a hidden dimension of intimacy, this artistic decision perfectly encapsulates the extreme attention to detail for which Koons has become renowned.
